Insurance Points
Overall North Carolina enjoys the 5th lowest auto insurance rates in the United States. In
determining what your individual rates will be insurance companies consider different factors.
Mainly:
1. Your driving record
2. Where you live
3. The type of car you drive
4. The use of your car
5. The number of years of driving experience you have
As you see one of the factors that determines how much you pay for auto insurance is your
driving record. The North Carolina Safe Driver Incentive Plan was enacted by the General

Things to know before you Pay it Off
When you get pulled over and issued a traffic ticket in North Carolina, the officer may tell you that if you do not want to go to court you can just "pay it off" before your court
date. There is even a section of the ticket that tells you how much to pay and shows you where to sign your name.
Before you just "pay it off", you should know about Driver's License Points and Insurance Points.
Driver's License Points
In North Carolina a person does not have a right to have a driver's
license. It is a privilege that the state can take away from you. One
of the factors that the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) uses
when determining who they will grant a driver's license is your past
driving record. Each time you are convicted of a moving violation
you will be assessed points based on the schedule below. If you
accumulate 12 or more points within a year, the DMV may suspend
your license.
NCGS 20-16 Authority of Division to Suspend License
The DMV determines the points you receive as follows:
Passing a stopped school bus
Reckless driving (misdemeanor)
Hit & run with property damage only - misdemeanor
Following too closely
Driving on the wrong side of the road
Illegal passing
Running through a stop sign
Speeding in excess of 55 mph
Failing to yield right of way
Running through a red light
No driver's license / license expired more than one year
Failure to stop for a siren
Driving through a safety zone
Driving with no liability insurance
Failure to report an accident where such report is required
Speeding in a school zone in excess of the posted speed limit
All other moving violations
Failure to properly restrain a child in a child seat or seat belt
Littering involving the use of a motor vehicle
Seat Belt violations
Improper Equipment / plates / registration / muffler / inspection
sticker display
A lot of people get into trouble by driving during this period while
their license is revoked. If you are convicted of any moving violation
that your committed while your license was revoked, the DMV will
revoke your license for an additional period of time ranging from
one year to permanently.
NCGS 20-28.1 Conviction of moving offense committed while
driving during period of suspension or revocation of license.
